Aluminothermic welding is the most commonly used method of joining railway, tram and crane tracks. This welding procedure uses an aluminothermic mixture with the high calorific value (over 3000 kJ/kg), which is specially prepared by mechanically mixing the iron oxides and aluminum powder, various additives and micro supplements. In general, the benefits of this welding procedure in relation to other procedures are as follows: • The process enables the homogenization of the chemical, structural and mechanical properties of the welded joint with the properties of the basic material, • This procedure leaves a very compact and homogeneous unbreakable compound along the entire cross-section of the welding ends, • The geometry of the welded joint is impeccable, • Equipment for carrying out this procedure is simple, it is reusable and easy to handle and manipulate. The aluminothermic welding procedure does not require external energy; the energy released by the exothermic reaction after the activation of the aluminothermic mixture is sufficient to heat and melt the parts. The high purity of the components, the additives and micro supplements, their mutual chemical relationship, as well as the special technology of making the aluminothermic mixture, are guarantee for the required quality of the welded joint. Molds are designed to provide uniform heat dissipation, achieving the appropriate structure of the welded joint. For the mixture composition design (recipe), which is flexible and itself depends on the buyer needs, the internal mathematical model was created and used (for more information about the model see the Article at Metallurgical and Material Engineering journal Metallurgical and material engineering). The buyer should define the type and quality of the rails or parts that are welded (chemical composition, static strength, toughness, hardness, dynamic strength, structure, cross-section etc.). Based on these characteristics, which represent the input parameters of the model, very fast and reliable output data are obtained referring to the quality of the welded joints. The adequacy of the obtained parameters is analyzed experimentally by the accredited laboratory testing.
